To answer this question and in my most sincere opinion – NEVER if they are SPITTING real Hip-Hop. (What’s real Hip-Hop?) That real lyrical ish! That mind blowing – hit rewind a few times to make sure you heard that ish! That head-bobbin’ neck-aching ish. That never-ending on-going authentic never heard anything like that ish!
I’ll buy you if you’re 50 and spitting that realness with a dope azz track to follow! Everyone else… oh well! Count your days!
All this jive about Hip-Hop being dead is crazy. Hip-Hop is as dead as the next emcee makes it be. Do your part! Spit some illness.
I welcome the new FLIP-STOP! But… I also believe (nah I know) that a real lyricist, word-flipper, off the dome lyrical-sayer, and any emcee who whips a track to musical little tiny bits of saw dust is something that will NEVER EVER tire with me. EVER!
I’m having a moment of missing ALL the illness of the pioneers of Hip-Hip! There’s no such thing as ‘retirement’ when it comes to these cats!

I totally agree with you on this one Lady. If emcees should throw in the towel then so should every other musical artist be they singers, producers, etc and where would we be without true talent like Tina Turner, Gladys Knight etc? Dr Dre is pushing 50 and he is still one of hip hop most potent producers and I don’t see an end to his leagcy yet. The same goes for Jay-Z. There is no expiration date on real hip hop period end of story!
Hey there Khaos… I’m feeling you there.. I think artists like Gladys Knight and Tina Turner are not created in this era. Sadly, these days there are very few records made that are timeless creations. I think you are right about Dre… dude is not going anyway and we know Jay-Z is making history. I’m glad KRS is back on the scene as well… I guess this is where we watch the story unfold…

I have to agree with you and the above commenter. See the thing is, it seems to me like the industry is in brainwash mode, age capping lyricists like the NBA. But, without artists who lived in and survived in an era where lyricism was paramount, thede emcees are the only ones who can maintain the integrity and maintain the bar (so to speak) of this culture. This culture and its followers are so easily swayed in different directions until eventually, the artform means nothing but entertainment. HipHop was always more than entertainment. But with what i’ve been hearing as of late, i’ve become a bit jaded. Nobody capped Rolling Stones. Emcees!! Hello WreckAb.. Speak my brutha… I agree that it’s all about entertainment these days and quick dollar bills. I’d love to see the culture of ‘music-makin’ return to just that!;) Not only with Hip-Hop but R&B music as well… I call it ‘lost soul’

Never hang up the headphones and throw away the mic!!! There is no age limit, but the number of true hip hop heads that feel you may diminish as the airwaves get dilluted with rubbish for all to hear. I say commercial hip hop was on life support for awhile. Hip Hop started on the streets and the streets will keep it alive and well. Underground artist and people who are truly inspired by the hip hop gods that came before will always spit more fire than anyone seeking fame and fortune. In my opinion, Commercial Hip hop has it’s place like everything else, but if it becomes all we have Hip Hop dies.
Hello Shahidah… This is very well said… You’ve got my co-signature on this one!!!
