When Your Only Option Is To Mix With Headphones
While personally, I can’t imagine mixing with headphones for several reasons including lack of accurate sonic imagery while listening at pronounced left/right fields for long periods at a time… many folks I know rely upon this method of mixing as opposed to speaker/monitors.
Perhaps you live in a apartment with thin walls and you don’t want to disturb your neighbors. Another reason may be lack of studio isolation, therefore you don’t want to disturb the rest of the family. Maybe you travel all the time and need to get a good rough mix started on the plane or in your hotel, and of course perhaps you simply can’t afford a speaker system just yet.
Whatever your reasons, it’s important to understand how to get the best experience from mixing with ‘cans’ as they are nicknamed. Although you may be budget conscious, it’s essential to get a great pair of earphones that are designed to handle the job. Sennheiser and Sony seems to be leading off with their HD and MDR Series. The Sennheiser HD600 and HD280 are most popular while the Sony MDR 7506 is rearing in. AKG and Audio Technica brands are also favorable mentions.
You also need a decent amp to drive the best response from your headphones especially for mixing purposes. Go to your nearest retailer and ask for the best options in your purchase of both. Listen through several pair of headphones for sound as well as comfort to ensure you can live with your new best friend.
Some things to keep in mind:
A. Headphones are GREAT for critical reference and preventing bleeds when tracking.
B. While speaker systems may not aurally pick up some of the additional pops/noises during tracking… headphones does an excellent job with this.
C. While some believe headphones eliminate the use of a room that’s not treated for mixing; It is proven the room gives a better sense of field imagery and balance.
Are you mixing with headphones and if so, what kind do you use and why? If considering this, what type do you plan to purchase? Do share!
